  • Despite humble beginnings in Alabama and never independently wealthy, Jones began buying pieces in the 1960s after noting African-American art was underrepresented in public galleries.
  • As the drawings, paintings, photographs, sculptures and other works grew into the hundreds, part of his collection was exhibited at the University of Delaware in 1993.
  • “My goal has been to incorporate African-American art into American art,” he told The Tuscaloosa News in 2008 when he made his donation to the University of Alabama with a plan for it to be part of the curriculum.
  • Born in Bessemer, Ala., in the central part of the state, he was raised in the Muscoda Mining Camp of an iron and steel corporation.

Just got off a phone call. Haven’t blogged for couple days. The talk today was pretty refreshing.

  • UPDATED: 12:38 am EST January 30, 2010.
  • “The officers on the scene did not establish command and they didnt follow department policy,” said William “Wiz” Miller, DeKalb County Public Safety Director, in announcing the firings.
  • Neighbors CBS Atlanta spoke with said they were glad the four firefighters were fired and hoped it provided some peace for the family.
  • Her family told CBS Atlanta’s Renee Starzyk that they want an apology from firefighters.
  • CBS Atlanta asked the public safety director Friday if the firefighters would issue an apology.
  • “They should want to apologize themselves.CBS Atlanta obtained a copy of Bartlett’s 911 call.
  • According to DeKalb County records, she called 911 and told the dispatcher she had accidentally set her house on fire with the “thing for my nose.” She gave her address and the line went dead.
  • Oxendine said, “At the bare minimum they would have to do a thorough perimeter check.”Oxendine said if a firefighter didn’t leave his fire truck, that would be considered a violation of the training standards.
  • A spokesperson for DeKalb County said proper training is not the issue.

  • The Wild recalled goalie Wade Dubielewicz the minors as insurance behind Josh Harding before Thursday night’s game in Denver against the Colorado Avalanche.
